When considering hiring a contractor always check with the Ca. state contractors board to assure the contractor is licensed and has workers comp. Ins. You can easily reach them at www.cslb.ca.gov and check under the company name, the owners name or the state license number. Be aware that the maximum amount of money a contractor may ask for up front is 10% or $1,000 which ever is lesser. This is the law and all contractors must comply. Many times a consumer gets in a hurry and hires a contractor who answers his phone immediately and can start a project immediately. Something to keep in mind is that if a contractor can start a project immediately, there may be a reason he has no project in progress. Most reputable contractors have a backlog of some time because they know what they are doing and they are in demand. Be wary of a contractor who can start the day you call them. There are several different paint qualities and most manufacturers make lesser and higher grades of paint. Since the labor is going to be the same regardless of the paint quality, you the consumer is better off in the long run choosing a high grade of paint and there for having your paint job last longer. Exterior materials: The paint that goes on your stucco for example should be a 100% acrylic flat paint. Since wood expands and contracts with heat and cold and moisture you should use a 100% acrylic semi-gloss enamel on these areas. Interior examples: Kitchens and bathrooms should be painted with a semi-gloss enamel or a gloss enamel. The higher the gloss paint has the harder it cures and that makes clean up easier. Bedroom walls, hall walls and living room walls can be painted with a flat latex paint, a low sheen paint or a semi-gloss paint. Flat paint can be touched up easily but can not be washed for the most part. Low and semi gloss enamels can’t be touched up easily but they can be washed for long periods of time.
